This is the beginning of a series of articles to understand various aspects of artificial intelligence that are transforming our lives. We will explore:

  • What is AI, really, and what does it offer?
  • What are data centers, and why are they being built in our neighborhoods?
  • What are people’s concerns?
  • How is AI changing our society, institutions, and everyday lives?
  • How can we arrive at a win-win proposition?

What is AI, really?

Artificial Intelligence, in my view, is really enhanced intelligence.

Think of Google Search as an example. When we are looking for information on something, we type a few keywords into the Google search box. It searches its vast databases and gives us relevant information, often in the form of links to various sources. Traditional search engines use sophisticated algorithms to interpret our queries, identify relevant information, and rank the results. However, we generally have to go through those results, interpret the information, and draw our own conclusions.

Artificial Intelligence has taken a huge leap forward. Instead of simply searching for information, we can ask questions in everyday language. AI can interpret the meaning and context of our questions, draw upon vast amounts of learned information, and generate meaningful responses. It can explain complex subjects, connect ideas, summarize information, and help us think through problems.

Rather than simply providing information, AI can help us turn information into useful knowledge. It can enhance our own intelligence by expanding our ability to learn, understand, analyze, and create.

However, AI-generated responses are not necessarily accurate. They still require human judgment and verification. That is why I see AI as a tool for enhancing human intelligence, rather than replacing it.
